There are things
a girl woman discovers she has to do when she truly exercising her
independence. You find yourself responsible for bills and more. However, I
notice there a few things we women fail to acknowledge, our health beyond our
skin and hair. Yes, the skin is the largest organ. Yes, hair has the ability to
alter how we feel any given day. Nevertheless, our health goes beyond that.
It is no mystery;
there are breast men, fatty butt men, leg men, and men who love it all. There
is anal cancer, but it’s rare. Legs are not immune from hurt either; however,
our cleavage enhancers are causing difficulty in great numbers. Between
television programming and the internet, the information surrounding the topic
is vast. Opinions differ. Data can change from one research study to another. The
fact remains, women, particularly women of African descent, cannot afford to be
ignorant.
Most know
someone that has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Too many people know
someone who lost their battle. Early in 2013, Angelina Jolie brought it to our
attention, though drastic, she got our attention. Personally, I didn’t need her
procedure to conjure up thoughts about prevention. I had my own then. I have my
own now. In my family, in my direct lineage, it’s in my blood. The reality of
breast cancer is engraved forever into my walls of my mind, my heart beats
awareness. My mind is alert. Yearly breast cancer walks don’t remind me. Phone
calls do. Treatment dates remind me. RIPs remind me. My DNA reminds me. Some
people wonder what they will do if they get it. I’ve asked when I will get it. That
type of questioning has caused me to research, read, analyze, interpret, and
decide. Young and seasoned, my family has bared that burden. When multiple women
have had it AND have been lost to it and the names don’t correlate with my
usage of the conjunction and, your thought process shifts.
Prayer
without works is dead. Therefore, I changed some things. Simple things that
weren’t costly or overwhelming. I made some decisions for my future to decrease
my already increased chances. No, doctors aren’t God. I understand that, but if
everything is created for a reason, the knowledge isn’t there for the sake of
taking up space. In high school, way back when, I used to say, baby steps. It
wasn’t until very recently did I recognize the power of taking baby steps,
though small, progress is progress.
At the end
of the day, it’s a lifestyle change. Here are a few steps I have taken to ease
my mind, when it starts to wander.
1.
I
changed my deodorant to an all natural one, if I am feeling spicy, I make it
myself.
2.
Get
checked for the gene, especially if it runs in your family.
3.
No
birth control contraceptives. Grant it this is for several reasons, but it was
part of the thought process.
4.
Moderate
Alcohol Consumption. Your body will thank you for many reasons.
5.
Fell
in love with Fruits and Veggies. Organic isn’t always financially feasible, you
can still eat locally grown and in season.
Side note 1:
My GYN informed me, after I am finished having children (mind you, I haven’t
started), she suggested I take out my lady parts. I am still researching it,
but it’s good to know.
Side note 2:
Managing weight is also something that can help decrease the risk by 13%, due
to my natural frame and size, I am able to woosah, but a little exercise never
hurt anyone, even naturally slim women.
Here is the
link to a few more articles that can help answer of your questions.
You’re busy,
you’re working, you have children, your with child, you are planning a wedding,
an anniversary, prepping for a promotion, counting pennies, dodging bill
collectors, but life has its way of showing up when you least expect it. Suddenly
you have time for the things you took for granted, like your health. There is
nothing wrong with making sure you’re okay, even if your reasons are for your
team. They need you. You need you. We need you.
