This eBook is dedicated to my Nana's legacy, my Mother's motivation, my Daughter's inspiration and to all my natural girls rocking those kinks and curls
Introduction
Quite often I receive phone calls, text messages, emails and social media message from lovely ladies who are ready to transition to their naturally beautiful state and some who have already started their Natural hair journey. I try to take the time to chat with each newly or soon-to-be naturalista to find out their motives, their current hair state and to guide them on the empowering journey to embracing their natural hair. Over the years, I received so many calls, texts and messages that I realized journeying to the natural you would be so much easier if there was a handbook to guide you on your journey. So, here it is, a handbook to aid in everything from transitioning to the big chop, from pre poos to shampoos, from oils and Shea butter to conditioners and detanglers. You can find all of the basics in this handbook, I have even gone as far as to include basic hair care recipes, as well as a few recipes from the Kinky Duchess volt.
As you read this handbook, you will find many helpful tips to aid in your hair maintenance, but keep in mind they are tips that you can use and tweak according to your hair needs. Before we go on, let me put it out there, I am no doctor and I am not a licensed cosmetologist, I am a regular kinky, curly girl who had to find my way along this journey to loving the natural me. I watched YouTube videos as I'm sure many of you have done as well, I've subscribed to all of the blogs, I've read books on natural hair, essential oils and more. I've been first in line to speak to the pros who make the products some of you use in your hair today, I've done all I could do to learn and embrace me, naturally, and that's what I'm sharing with you. No gimmicks, no fairy tales, just the real journey of a real kinky girl.
They say 'Kinky Girls Have All The Fun,' so quite often throughout the book you will see me refer to ladies with natural hair as kinky girls. This is not at all to represent anything raunchy or explicit, it is strictly a fun way to describe us naturalistas. For a very long time our hair was looked down upon as nappy, disgusting and ugly, now lets show the world that we are beautiful, we have beautiful hair and yes, black girls can grow long hair. This is exactly what prompted my decision for the title of this book, Kinky Hair Don't Care?...the thought behind is that we have kinky hair and we do not care what others think, we rock it with pride. The title is posed in question form so you can begin to challenge yourself to embrace your kinks and curls and no longer care what other people say. So ask yourself, "Am I a kinky girl who doesn't care?"
